WORSHIP (1)

Session 22

We can learn a lot about worship as we look at the life of Abraham, a worshipper.  Abraham particularly emerges as a model of worship for us because he came from a polytheistic background & culture to serve the on true God.  What can we learn?

1.         He recognised the one true God from amongst the other gods.    He heard God’s voice (Gen.12:1) and realised that He was alive and had a personality.

2.         He smashed the idols and served God.           God’s command is quite clear, “You shall have no other gods before me….you shall not bow down to them or worship them…” (Ex.20:1-5a)

We know we don’t worship God through fear, but we ought to fear if we don’t worship the God we know.

It is not then that fear that leads us to worship God, but to make our choices.

3.         He heard God’s voice.      God & he had much dialogue through his life.

When we stop listening to God and

                      when we stop seeking God,

                                                we stop worshipping God.

4.         He brought the best he had.       Where is the word, “worship”, first found in the Bible?   Gen.22:4.

Where is worship first implicitly mentioned?   Gen.4:3-5.

these verses have absolutely nothing to do with singing,

but  absolutely everything to do with sacrifice.

One of the most common Greek words for “worship” is “latreia” = “service”.

We bring our best by sacrificing ourselves  (Romans 12:1).

5.         He was sensitive to God’s promptings.  (Gen.22:10-12)                   The more we worship God the more we get to know Him and the better we feel the lightest of touches and hear the quietest of whispers.
