We've been asking questions in Senior Link How
could we help to attract senior people to new events? What
are the things that everyone tends to get enthusiastic about? We
struck on two – food and holidays – and have now begun
to expand our activities in these areas since Spring 2003. On
3rd April we held a lunch in Church for the ‘young at
heart’ aiming to bring in people from the café, other churches and by
publicity. Julia
agreed to provide the lunch using her professional skills, so we had no
fears on that score and we arranged for Joyce Sefton, a well-known speaker
from the Outlook organisation to come and give an after-lunch talk.
We put a maximum number of 50 on the event and were delighted when
52 sat down for lunch in a warm and friendly environment.
The lunch was superb, the talk excellent and both Joyce and
ourselves were greatly encouraged by over 20 people asking for the tracts
she had said were available. The
other responses were people saying, “can we have a lunch like this every
week or every month”. A bit
overwhelming that would be, but our next one is planned for November 13th. In
early August when the temperatures were in the 80’s we held a weeklong
‘ Our
Twelve on Tuesday services continue each month with an increasing number
of people from café who do not come to Sunday services. We have been
greatly helped by those who have willingly come to speak or sing. All
these events have been supported by many of our Church people who are too
numerous to list and many of whom already give a lot of time and effort to
their Christian work. They
know who we mean and we extend to them our thanks for their help and
encouragement. We
are a small team seeking to expand these activities amongst the ‘over
55’s’. Each year we get a bit older and we would like to see what in
management terms is called “succession planning” i.e., some slightly
(or a lot) younger people joining us. |
