SENIOR LINK

Friendship, Food, Fun and Fellowship – these are the four ‘F’s’ which best describe senior activities over the past year. From the Atrium Café mornings, which have been a major outreach centre at PBC for the past 30 years, we have seen developments, which really excite us.  God is at work and we in the ‘Young @ Heart’ team are giving Him thanks for the privilege of being hands and feet in His service.

SENIOR LINK ANNUAL REPORT 05

“Your answers have to add up to £43.3s.6d! Here is the clue to the first amount in your sum – an ailing aquatic*”

You might reasonably wonder how such frivolous questions in one of our quizzes does anything towards the aims of our Church, but get 6 or 8 people round a table helping each other to find the answers and it is amazing how ice is broken, friendships develop and thought and discussion on deeper issues can be introduced.  Other activities such as gentle keep fit, crafts and films of local interest have given plenty of variety to supplement the ever popular lunches that now follow our monthly ‘Twelve on Tuesday’ services.  It is encouraging to be able to report that we have maintained our numbers of 30-40 at these services and that a high proportion is of people who do not regularly attend our Sunday Services.  The ‘fun’ relationship-building activities run on until about 3.00pm with usually 20-30 participating.

We have been pleased to see the Methodist church running their own ‘Twelve on Tuesday’ services now on the first Tuesday of the month (ours is on the third) and see them picking up well in numbers.  We have usually been able to give them the support of 6 or so of our own folk.  They too provide a very good lunch! They haven’t yet ventured into other activities but we hope to encourage them to join with us in more shared events.

Talking of lunches (and aren’t we always?) we have again led 2 ‘specials’ with over 70 people at each – again mainly non church people. Julia Shuttleworth and her team provide a first rate menu and the atmosphere of friendship makes these events most enjoyable. The guest speakers have told strong personal stories that have been encouraging and challenging.

‘Holiday @ Home’ for a week in August appeared to be very well received and was blessed by beautiful weather that encouraged people to come in good numbers and enhanced the two outdoor events, the strawberry tea kindly hosted by Tricia Johnson again and the coach trip to the Wirral with over 50 people at each. From our viewpoint the focal event of each day (except the coach trip) was the Thought for the Day each morning, and it was good to see so many of our non-church people able to come to the Sunday tea and Songs of Praise service.  This is the purpose of all the events – to have the opportunity to bring the Good News of Jesus to senior people who have not yet made a commitment or who have lost the wonderful benefits of drawing near to Him regularly.

So where next? Well we do feel challenged to build on the friendships made by introducing a course particularly suitable for seniors along the lines of Alpha. We aim to do a trial run of ‘Christianity Explored’ in the New Year with the object of seeing whether we can then interest some of our Senior Link friends in participating in a course in the Spring.

We are very grateful to so many of you who have given us your support practically and prayerfully during the past year. We will need your prayer support if this new venture is to be fulfilled.  Time is short!
