What do Christians believe?

LEADERSHIP

We believe very much in team ministry and, therefore, our three full-time Ministers are part of the Eldership which, together with the Deacons, makes up the leadership of the church.

As a Baptist Church we believe in the gathered church sensing the mind of the Lord. We therefore hold regular Church Meetings where Church members discuss and pray about vision and direction. In this way we believe the Holy Spirit directs the way forward for the church. Also see the Leaders page.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EVERY MEMBER

The Scripture is quite clear that each church member has natural and spiritual gifts and abilities. We believe in helping people to discover what those are and finding opportunities to use them in the local and/or wider church.

We believe that God uses both men and women in ministry and the church benefits from the input to preaching and leadership that both men and women make.

WORD AND SPIRIT

We hold to a firm belief that the Bible is God's authoritative word and, therefore, see Scriptural exposition as the corner stone of our preaching and teaching. We realise also the great need for the power of the Holy Spirit to be the controlling factor in each Christian's life and in the life and worship of the church.

COMMUNITY RELEVANCE

We are constantly seeking, through prayer and action, to be relevant to the local community without compromising the Gospel message or lifestyle. To that end, outreach into the community takes a high priority in the church through things which could be termed 'Christian social action' and through a range of informal and more formal events, such as quiz or sport evenings, cabaret suppers, dinners with a guest speaker, multi-media Guest Services, Alpha courses. The church building is open two or three mornings a week as a cafe and we also run a Mums & Toddlers group called 'Playaway'.

CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE

The hard and creative work that goes into leading our children's and youth ministry demonstrates the high priority that we place on our young people. The church is privileged to enjoy a high standard of children's and youth work and is urgent about sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with young people in the schools and on the streets.

THE WIDER CHURCH...

We are in the very positive position of sharing strong relationships with the other churches in Poynton and, as the leaders meet regularly together, keep looking for ways of working and worshipping together. The senior Minister of the church is involved at the heart of other leaders' groupings in Manchester, the North West and nationally, as well as ministering in many different situations across the U.K.

We take world mission seriously and express that through encouraging people to take short term experience or respond to a long-term call, as well as supporting those members of our church, and other organisations, who are involved in wider mission.

BAPTISM AND MEMBERSHIP

As a Baptist church we hold firmly to what we see as the Scriptural command for those who come to faith in Christ to express that, publicly, in baptism.

We do not practice infant baptism, but encourage parents to take the opportunity at a Sunday service to give thanks to the Lord for their baby, to dedicate themselves to Christian parenthood, and request the prayerful support of the church in that role.

We affirm that every person who has repented and put their faith in Christ Jesus and made a confirmation of that by a public expression, normally through baptism, is a member of the worldwide church. However, we believe that, according to Scripture, each person should play their part in the local church and we therefore encourage those who attend Poynton Baptist Church to express their commitment to the church by becoming members. This gives the person a full part in the discussion and prayer regarding the life of the church, especially in the Church Meetings.

WHAT IS THE CHURCH LIKE?

Well, you must be the judge, but we believe Poynton Baptist Church is lively, friendly, informal, busy, outward looking and with a vision for growth!

The church has a miraculous story of growth (the most memorable part of which started some 30 years ago when there were only 16 members) and has been experiencing much renewal under God's gracious Holy Spirit over the last few years. Poynton Baptist Church has a good mix of all ages from babies to Senior Citizens.

WHAT DO WE BELIEVE?

This is not the place to write down the whole Statement of Faith. However, to state briefly, we hold to those tenets of faith that are described as 'evangelical' and as an example, we endorse the Evangelical Alliance Statement of Faith, as well as that of the Baptist Union.

and as

Christians believe

God proved his love for us, he demonstrated it, for 'God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life' (John 3 v16).
