Mission to Mostar in 2007 - they have returned home now!!!!!

It may seem a long time since the news was full of stories of ethnic cleansing, the siege of Sarajevo, tensions between Serbs, Croats and Muslims, NATO air strikes, Srebrenica etc back in the 1990s, but for the young people of the lands of the former Yugoslavia these memories die hard as they struggle to recover and build for the future.

In the intervening years a lot has taken place in the Balkans, including rebuilding work, elections (and even Serbia winning the Eurovision Song Contest!), but in amongst all these things, God has been on the move. Young Christians in Serbia have been trained to go and spread the Gospel – which they have, all over the Balkans. Christians from all over the world have assisted in the humanitarian effort, people from our own shores have been prompted to go and live and serve and witness in the name of Jesus in land of confusion, mistrust and pain.

And the story of God’s journey in that land continues. And a group of eleven from PBC’s Energy youth ministry are joining in with that story. In fact, the whole fellowship, and others have joined in.

How? Well, this summer, for two weeks, seven teens and four leaders are off to Mostar , Bosnia Herzegovina to work with young people, refugees and churches, all with the aim of serving God’s purposes for those they’ll meet. Yet even before the summer comes, the work began as hundreds of people have helped fundraise for the trip.

Whether it was the PBC Golf Society, the Ruby curry house, four of the regions best young indie bands playing at a gig in the Methodist Church or people offering babysitting, rounds of golf and Birthday cakes to be auctioned off, great fun was top of the bill and funds were raised

The team will be working with Novi Most International, a Christian missions organisation who have been working in Mostar for over a decade, helping young people overcome the effects of the past, equipping them to face the future with hope and empowering them to be instruments of change and good news. Much of their work will take place at Klub Novi Most, a youth centre that offers skills and language training, love, support and friendship, sports and the opportunity to explore Christian faith.

God has blessed us in many ways – what an opportunity to be a blessing. He has given us gifts – what an opportunity to be a gift. He has given us new life – what an opportunity to pass it on, and in the process get a new perspective on life.

Please pray for Kate, Martin, Jonny, Hannah, James, Heidi, Joe, Alan, Keith, Di, Helen and of course, Mostar.
