PBC GOLF SOCIETY AGM January 2011

Secretary's Report

So we have now completed 16 seasons and my mind goes back to our first tentative steps which was a round of golf at Moorend Golf Course in 1994 and the year after the formation of the Society. There is a significant point about playing at Moorend which, in my report to the Church, I described as ‘a modest course’. Compare this with the fact that the team match versus Peak District Christian Golf Society was played at Bramhall Golf Club, which is a quality course, and the fact we played there, and the Society have been encouraged to visit again.

What does this prove? Well in my book it says that we are near to being ‘house trained’; a colloquialism which to me means;

1.      Care of Course – repair of pitch marks, replace divots, rake bunkers etc.

2.      General Conduct and dress code

3.      Speed of Play

 It has been a good season with many highlights;

·         Team match play

·         Versus Peak District at Bramhall

·         Versus Trafford Eagles at Chorlton-cum-Hardy

·         Mid week break Eagles/PBC at Formby Hall; many thanks Brian Dique and his subordinates for this

·         Derek Crookes again organised a trip to Florida which was most enjoyable; thank you Derek.

 Our ‘Flagship’ event, the ‘Steve Oake Memorial Golf Day’ was played at Davenport Golf Club who always make us so welcome.  We were delighted that Mr and Mrs Robin Oake attended and that Robin presented the trophy and prizes. An extract from Robin’s letter:-

 ‘Thank you so much for keeping such good memories of Steve alive, for the excellent organisation of the tournament and the warm welcome you gave us all.’

 7 other Golf Days were played and a ‘Knock Out’ competition and an ‘Order of Merit’ competition; all very well organised by Paul Withington with some assistance from Pete Finch.

 The ‘End of Season Dinner and Prize’ presentation was again in the hands of ‘Team Marsden’,  i.e. Mr and Mrs Steve Marsden and John Churchman. It was again held at Hazel Grove Golf Club; good food, good music, good fellowship and the Quiz. They are standing down after 5 years and we wish to thank them very much.

 The presentation part of the evening was in the hands of Mr Captain, Derek Crookes and Pete Finch.

 So the year in office as Captain will come to an end at the AGM for the popular Bill Wardle, so thank you for all you have brought to it and I hope it has good memories for you.

 Officers of the Society (2010)

Captain                                                Bill Wardle

Chairman                                            Bill Norman

Treasurer                                            Derek Crookes

General Secretary                              Alan Entwistle

Assistant Secretary                            Richard Johnson

Competition Secretary                       Paul Withington

Assistant Competition Secretary       Pete Finch

Social Secretary                                 Steve Marsden

Not on the Committee, but very important; Margaret Norman and John Churchman.

 So once again I say it has been a good season but we must always be looking for improvement.

 Rules and Etiquette Evenings

 We often talk about this but the very wide area covered by our membership presents a problem. We also find that those most in need of advice are reluctant to attend. However, if you want one of these sessions, let me know.

 I mentioned before, in some European countries, that members have to reach a certain standard of play and etiquette before being allowed on the course. We are not, and do not aspire to being elite, but we can be aware of our conduct and etiquette (and Christmas presents – get some lessons with a good Pro!)

 All the very best for season 2011.

  Alan Entwistle
