Christmas Message from Rev. Neil Brighton:

In our family Christmas is one occasion in the year when we make an effort to get together. A reminder that some things are important enough to go out of our way for, even if that means driving lots of miles and buying more presents.

This Christmas with the growing affects of unemployment and the economy there will be many people who have to think carefully about spending on presents and other festive things. Yet although this can be painful it also makes us think about what is important to us and what we value.

In Church this year we are using Luke’s gospel and his record of the birth of Jesus as the base for our Christmas services. To the first readers of the Gospel the language and structure would have felt familiar, much like the words of the Hebrew Bible (our Old Testament) which would help them feel at home with the story. Yet for all the comfortable words it opens up something new and unexpected; God is at work and Jesus’ birth ushers in a new age.

Luke’s writing is careful and prepared. The details of Jesus’ birth are set out help show the importance of what happens, a simple message shorn of decoration focuses attention on what is truly important. At a time when the media interest was centred on Rome the real story of God’s saviour was breaking in Bethlehem . No hype, no publicity machine, simply God making his move and preparing to turn the world upside down.

That first Christmas, in Bethlehem , God’s promise of wholeness of life, of justice and peace comes to fulfilment. God’s promise to rescue people and bring them into the family of God moves from a vague possibility towards reality.

As we party and enjoy time with family and friends, let’s remember that Christmas is about God taking the initiative and being focused on what really matters. And let’s join with Mary, the angels, the shepherds and others in wonder at what God has done – because that’s worth celebrating.
