Christmas Message from Rev. Neil Brighton:

Christmas time evokes a wide range of feelings and emotions in people.

For some, the beginning of the Christmas season is marked by the start of the frenetic shopping activity, hours spent in shopping malls amidst tacky music and Christmas cheer, organising presents, food and drink for the big day.

Others feel that Christmas is an occasion to be thankful for what we have; recognising that there are many both in the UK and around the world who don’t have the luxuries that we take for granted.

While over-commercialised consumption has little to do with the story of Christmas, celebration and partying is rightly at the heart of Christmas. Celebration and joy at the fact that God both created the world and came, in Jesus, to be born into it; sharing life with us.

In church this advent we have decorated the building with a variety of things chosen to reflect the gospel story. We have also included thoughts written by people sharing what Christmas means to them. Many of these have included gratitude to God for what he has done in Jesus’ birth, as well as thanks for family and friends and all that such precious relationships bring.

What really makes Christmas such an amazing time is that this is the time of year we recall Jesus birth. It is extraordinary to consider how the eternal Son of God chose to be born in Bethlehem, amidst the messiness and uncertainty of life in 1st century Israel. Yet the marvel of the Christmas story isn’t its down to earth nature but the fact that it is God’s Son who is born; its not that babies were born in difficult situations but that this baby was someone unique. Everything you need to know about God, but were afraid to ask is found in Jesus, in his birth and his life.

So as we enjoy family, presents and food this Christmas let’s remember whose arrival we are celebrating; let’s have a good time as we remember how God loves us and came to share his life with us,  let’s have fun as we mull over the way that Jesus shows us what God is truly like.

Merry Christmas

Neil
